The community helped him collect 100 pounds of clothes. That 100 pounds quickly doubled.

EAST POINT, Ga. — An East Point firefighter on a mission to give back his home country in a big way,

It all started when East Point Firefighter Krishna Craig attended an East Point community garage sale in April.

Craig already had plans to trave to Belize, and decided to buy a few shirts and shoes to take back to family members.

But when he shared his plans with a resident, that resident decided to donate all the garage sale leftovers to Craig's cause.

Word quickly spread through each of the Fire Department 3's shifts, and within a week, Craig had collected more than 100 pounds of clothes from firefighters and their families to give to the men, women and children of his home village. That 100 pounds quickly became 200 pounds.

While Craig was overwhelmed by everyone's generosity, he didn't expect the huge price tag that came along with shipping the collection.

Determined to see his mission through, though, Craig personally paid the shipping fee and brought the clothes back home in April. He insisted it was all worth it.

“It felt amazing to be able to donate so many items,” he said. “Many of the people in the village remembered me as a child, so for them to see me as a career firefighter, and giving back to the community that raised me, means everything.”

Craig has promised to continue to collect clothes, and plans to head back to Belize July 27.

If anyone would like to donate clothing or money to help cover shipping expenses, they are encouraged to contact him at kcraigsr@gmail.com
