Large industrial fire at East Point recycling facility

Dispatchers said there's "just a big pile of trash" that's burning at a recycling business in East Point.

EAST POINT, Ga. - East Point fire crews were working on a large industrial fire at Newell Recycling in the 1300 block of Central Avenue on Monday morning.

According to dispatchers with the East Point Fire Department, the fire started shortly after 10 a.m., and is "just a big pile of trash." Firefighters from the College Park, Hapeville and Atlanta fire departments as well as crews from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are assisting with the blaze.

Crews were alerted to the fire by thick smoke coming from an area north of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Hartsfield-Jackson officials said the fire has had no effect on operations at the airport.According to East Point Fire Department public information officer Renita Shelton, the fire began near the shredder, which shreds cars and other scrap metal objects. Their crews responded to the scene shortly after 10 a.m.

Shelton said the state Environmental Protection Division and the federal Environmental Protection Agency have been called out due to the smoke and possible runoff of materials from the fire and firefighting efforts.

No injuries were reported.
