While police are searching for clues to find a hit-and-run driver, family of the 70-year-old victim want to know who could have possibly left her to die on the side of the road.
"Why did this happen? How did this happen," demanded Todario Bellamy, the victim's son.
Police said the fatal incident happened around 10:00 Friday night in northwest Atlanta. Authorities said 70-year-old Marcella Bellamy had just left a store and was crossing James Jackson Parkway near Proctor Street when a SUV hit her. Police said it did not stop.
She was hit a second time, but this time, a driver stopped to help and call the police. Bellamy later died from her injuries.
As family prepares for her funeral, Bellamy's family has a message for the first driver who didn't stop.
"We want them to now that we forgive them to turn themselves in and acknowledge this horrible and tragic accident," Bellamy's niece Tabitha Boyce told 11Alive.
Todario agreed, saying while the family is hurting, they will find a way to heal, holding onto his mother's encouraging words.
"'Lean on God right now. God's got this.' That's what she would say," he said. "We will get through this. It will be difficult but we will get through this.
Police are asking for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
