Traffic stop, chase leads to officer-involved shooting in Fayetteville

Police initially attempted to pull over the vehicle in Meriwether County.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says what started as an attempted traffic stop in Meriwether County ended up as an officer-involved shooting in Fayetteville Friday night.

It happened near the intersection of Banks Road and State Route 85.

The GBI said pursuing officers stopped the vehicle using a combination of stop sticks and a PIT maneuver. Once the vehicle was stopped, the driver later identified as 36-year-old Rodriguez Kemp, emerged with a shotgun.

Kemp was shot by officers on the scene. He was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

A witness on the scene, Tony Jones, works at a restaurant nearby saw part of the chase.

"We saw the cops doing a high-speed chase coming up Fayetteville Road. And They did the PIT maneuver. We heard the police holler 'gun' and then we heard gunshots after that," he said.

Zac Rose, a witness on the scene, said he also saw officers coming down the road.

"The next thing I know I saw the cops got out the car and the dude out of his car and then they were shooting," Rose said.

The GBI has taken over the investigation and says they are working to gather details about what happened. No officers were injured.
