GREENE COUNTY, Ga. — A couple fishing under the I-20 bridge on Lake Oconee made a remarkable catch: A mysterious satchel containing two guns and some unique pieces of jewelry that date back to the 1930s.
One of the pieces of jewelry was engraved and investigators were able to track down the owner, who had died, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. They located his son in Alabama, who confirmed the items were stolen from his father in 1993.
The jewelry belonged to the man’s parents during their college days in the thirties, according to the sheriff’s office. The unique gold jewelry were sorority and fraternity pins.
At least one of the recovered guns was stolen during a burglary in 1993, according to police.
“We’ll probably never know why the burglar tossed the bag a state away, but it’s great to be able to get these items back to the family after 26 years in the lake,” the Greene County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.
