SMYRNA, Ga. — A man who served the Smyrna community for 23 years and was known for modernizing and bringing diversity to the city's police department, has died.
Stanley Hook, who started with the Smyrna Police Department in 1989 before retiring in 2012, died on Tuesday. He was 80.
"Chief Hook was a visionary leader for his time," Smyrna Police Sgt. Louis Defense III said.
Hook was said to be instrumental in helping modernize the department's computer technology program with crime fighting tools.
Hook also began the process of "hiring diversity" at the police department and the "implementation of the community policing model," which is still in practice today under the current leadership of Chief David Lee, Defense said.
Hook is survived by his wife, Patti, his two daughters Joanne and Amanda and other family members.
Visitation will be at Carmichael’s Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The memorial service will be at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on July 29.
