Gainesville police canvas roads for driver who hit and killed passerby

The man was found dead along Atlanta Highway, investigators said

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Gainesville police are on the lookout for a driver who hit and killed a man - but never stopped to help.

The accident happened late Sunday around 11:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of Atlanta Highway not far from Memoiral Park Drive. The pedestrian, an adult Hispanic male, was pronounced dead at the scene. But when police arrived, the driver was nowhere to be found.

Another person in the area ultimately found the vitim's body on the side of the roadway and called police. Crash investigators believe the suspect vehicle was traveling north on Atlanta Highway toward Gainesville - and not far from the Beaulieu of America flooring plant.

The suspect may have been in a full-size Chevrolet pickup or SUV - possibly built between 1999 and 2005. It should also have front end damage focused on the passenger side.

Investigators are looking for anyone who may have seen the crash or the truck involved. They believe the crash happened anywhere between 10 p.m. and the time a passerby first noticed the body.
