Woman hit by patrol SUV now facing charges in crash

Preliminary investigation suggests the woman was under the influence of some substance and wasn't in a crosswalk.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A woman who police say was crossing a major roadway in Hall County is now facing charges and the road to recovery after being hit by a patrol SUV.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday as a Gainesville Police officer was responding to a domestic call.  According to the Georgia State Patrol, Officer Brittany Frantzreb was rushing to the scene because a fellow officer had become involved in a struggle with the suspect.

But the trip stopped short because, according to Gainesville Police, the patrol car ended up hitting a woman who was crossing the road on Georgia Route 13. She was later identified as 57-year-old Vickie Barber of Gainesville.

First responders immediately began working to help Barber, who was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries.

The GSP has since taken over the investigation and has already found that Barber allegedly wasn't in a crosswalk and may have been intoxicated.

She now faces charges of pedestrian under the influence and violation of the law requiring a pedestrian to yield if not in a crosswalk.
