High school senior shot dead by 9th grade student: School district

First responders took the victim to the hospital, but police say he did not survive.

Officials say a ninth grade suspect is in custody after shooting a classmate dead outside a home in broad daylight.

According to DeKalb County Police, officers responded just after noon Thursday to a home in the 500 block of Lakewater View. When they got there, they found the teen unresponsive outside.

First responders took him to the hospital, but police said he did not survive.

The DeKalb County School District says both the victim and the gunman were Stephenson High School students. According to the district, the victim was a senior there.

Police have made an arrest in the case, but they are not giving the suspect's identity at this time. They haven't released the victim's name, either.

Right now, officials believe the deadly shooting was the result of an altercation between four or five boys that happened in the bus lane the day before.

Both the DeKalb County School District police and the DeKalb County Police Department are investigating.

According to the district, a crisis team will be at the school Friday morning to provide support to both students and staff.
