People who have criminal histories in Atlanta could have charges expunged in one day.
It's a process that can take up to six months, but local officials have organized a one-day event where eligible people can start and complete the process in a single setting. The typical process can be costly but this event is free.
They're calling it a historic Record Restriction Summit.
Felony and misdemeanor charges that did not result in convictions can be expunged. Only arrests by Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Fulton County Police Department and Atlanta Police Department officers are eligible to be expunged.
This event is in partnership with the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman John Eaves said they are planning more events for other cities in Fulton County because those respective police departments must be in attendance.
Eaves said this event is a first of it's kind.
"We've identified at least 5,000 people in Fulton County who fit into this category." he said.
Sometimes, these arrests can prevent people from getting or keeping employment and housing.
"These are people who really want to be integrated into society, be productive. So, we're trying to help them out, give them a chance," Eaves said.
