Person found dead on I-85 identified, likely died by suicide, police say

The woman died from a gunshot wound, police said.

GWINNETT, Ga. — A woman found dead in a car on Interstate 85 early Thursday morning is believed to have died by suicide.

The incident blocked traffic on I-85 northbound just south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard, police said.

Authorities believe that Sonja Lucretta Richardson, 25, died by suicide. The final ruling will need to be made by the Medical Examiner’s Office upon the conclusion of the autopsy.

11Alive's Nick Sturdivant reported the original call came in at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, and it took officers some time to find the car, which was in the HOV lane on I-85 N.

There was no one else in the car when police arrived. The passenger side of the vehicle was not damaged, though it appeared like the car might have hit the median wall before stopping on the driver's side.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Gwinnett County Police Department.
