College athlete killed near AUC catholic center | What we know

A suspect remains on the run.

ATLANTA — A shooting Tuesday at the Atlanta University Center left a student dead and a suspect on the run, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Here's what we know about the incident.

  • It happened in the parking lot of the Lyke House Catholic Center off Beckwith Street next to a student housing complex just after 1:30 p.m.  
  • The victim was identified as 20-year-old Jatonne Sterling.
  • Sterling was a sophomore baseball player for Clark Atlanta University and grew up in Chicago.
  • A candlelight vigil is being organized where the shooting took place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., according to multiple social media posts.
  • The athletics department posted on social media saying: "Clark Atlanta Athletics send its condolences to Jatonne Sterling’s family and friends. Gone too soon. Please keep Jatonne’s family in your prayers."
  • There is no suspect in custody. Police, however, say the shooting was not random.
  • APD says the incident remains under investigation and is asking anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 404-577-TIPS(8477). You can also submit an anonymous tip online.
