JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- The family of a woman who shot to death by police have released the first public photos of the victim.
Shukri Ali Said's family is also hosting an interfaith memorial for her on Saturday.
Said was shot to death by Johns Creek police on April 28 when, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, she refused to relinquish a knife she was allegedly brandishing, even after being Tased.
Johns Creek dispatchers said they received reports of a "demented person" with a knife shortly after 7 a.m. While en route to that address, officers encountered Said a short distance away, near the intersection of Abbot's Bridge and Sweet Creek roads.
Police said Said had a knife when officers encountered her. An altercation then occurred, which resulted in officers firing at the woman, wounding her.
During that altercation, several attempts were used to de-escalate the encounter, including a Taser and a foam exact impact round, in order to get Said to drop the knife.
Said's memorial will be held on May 12 at 7 pm at Ocee Park on Buice Road in Johns Creek.
Said's family is being represented by the Awad Firm to determine whether Said's civil liberties were violated.
In a statement, the family said it is so far satisfied with the GBI's investigation.
