Lighting strikes Dacula home, sparks fire | Mom and 3 children escape

The residents told fire officials they heard a loud boom and the house shook.

As storms moved across metro Atlanta Thursday, they left behind some damage.

A house in Gwinnett County caught fire from a lightning strike, officials say. Gwinnett County authorities said a mom and her three children escaped the home on Ridgemill Circle in Dacula.

They told fire officials they heard a loud boom and the house shook. Then, smoke started filling the upstairs level of the home.

Officials said they got out of the house and went to a neighbor's home across the street while firefighters worked to put out the fire during the storm.

When the crews arrived on the scene, they spotted flames coming from the roof. The fire caused extensive damage and left a hole in the roof.

Authorities said it appears that lightning may have hit the side of the home and traveled in through a utility line.

No one was injured.
