Man charged after hitting, killing school crossing guard

Whitaker has been charged with reckless driving and homicide by a vehicle in the first degree.

MABLETON, GA - The man who hit and killed a Cobb County school crossing guard has been charged and booked into jail.

Lamonte Roosevelt Whitaker, 38, was driving a Ford Focus traveling westbound in the school zone when he swerved into the center lane and started traveling on Veterans memorial highway. That's when he struck and killed Edna Umeh.

Speed calculations done on Whitaker's car revealed he was traveling 46 mph, well over the required 25 mph speed normally seen in a school zone, according to the warrant provided by Cobb County Magistrate Court.

Whitaker has been charged with reckless driving and homicide by a vehicle in the first degree.

He is being held in Cobb County Jail with no bond.
