Maine woman prepares salad, sticks fork into 3-inch lizard

Worse yet, she thinks she may have eaten part of it by mistake

KITTERY, Maine -- A woman in Maine found a little something extra in her pre-packaged lettuce and it wasn't very appetizing.

Michelle Car, who's a new mother, said she bought the store brand bag of lettuce at Shaw's Supermarket in New Hampshire. She washed it, made a salad and started eating it.

And then she noticed a lizard - a 3-inch long blue-bellied lizard with part of its tail missing.

So, not only is Carr concerned about finding a lizard in her lettuce, she's worried she may have eaten the tip of the tail.

Carr is hoping she doesn't get sick and that her nursing baby doesn't either. Her biggest question remains though: how did it get there?

In a statement, a spokesperson for Shaw's said in part:

"We were notified of this matter and immediately informed the supplier. We are working with the supplier to determine the cause and the steps needed to prevent this from reoccurring."

But the thought still makes Carr uneasy.

"It still makes me want to gag to this day just thinking about it," she said. "I was repulsed. I was disgusted. I was startled."

Carr called the state health department but a spokesperson said that because the lettuce was packaged and shipped from another state, any investigation would be conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Carr said that she has heard back from the FDA and that they're investigating how it happened.
