DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Recent heavy rain caused a major sewer spill in DeKalb County last week. According to county officials, the sewage entered into the Snapfinger Creek.
Officials said water went into the sewer system during the heavy rain event on Feb. 18 and caused a manhole to spill into the creek. The closest roadway to the area where this happened is Meadow Creek Path and Glen Park Drive.
The volume of the spill - which is categorized as major - was 9,210,195 gallons.
Officials said they actively monitored the situation until containment was achieved. Other actions taken to correct the issue included removing debris and disinfecting the area.
They also posted signs up to notify the public.
There's been a lot rain this month. Monday's rain propelled us to second place place for the wettest February on record in Atlanta. Atlanta has picked up more than 10 inches of rain so far this February. The only other February with more rain was 1961 with more than a foot of rain.
