Mall of Georgia evacuated due to smoke after fire

Firefighters said they were quickly able to control the fire.

ATLANTA — The Mall of Georgia was evacuated on Tuesday due to smoke from a fire in one of the stores, officials said.

Gwinnett County Fire officials said the fire happened at the rue21 in the mall, where a 911 caller reported seeing flames near the back of the store. The caller also told officials that shoppers were attempting to put out the fire with extinguishers.

Once on location, firefighters said they found a clothing rack on fire with smoke filling the main mall corridor. Luckily, they were able to extinguish the fire quickly, with no damage beyond the immediate area where the flames were, officials said.

Firefighters also said they used an electric fan to remove smoke from the store.

According to officials, one mall security guard was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation but declined any treatment.

Currently, the mall remains evacuated as a fire investigator works to determine the cause of the blaze.
