A man shot and killed his wife. When officers arrived, he refused to comply and was shot, GBI says

Joe Bernard Hobson was found standing in the driveway with a gun. He told deputies he had shot his wife, Alena Polston Hobson.

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Agents are investigating after a man was wounded Sunday during a shooting involving a law enforcement officer in Covington, according to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

It happened after Newton County sheriff's deputies were called to a home off Livingston Lane for a report of a stolen vehicle. When deputies arrived, they found Joe Bernard Hobson standing in the driveway with a gun, the GBI said.

During the incident, the 57-year-old told deputies he shot his wife. Deputies told Hobson to drop his gun several times, the GBI said. He allegedly refused to comply and that's when deputies shot Hobson.

After Hobson was shot, deputies searched the home and found his wife, Alena Polston Hobson. The 49-year-old was found lying down in the yard on the side of the home, the GBI said.

Hobson and his wife were both taken to a hospital for treatment. His wife was pronounced dead, while Hobson remains in critical condition, the release said.

The GBI will investigate both the shooting involving the officer and the homicide. Once they have their findings, the case will be turned over to the Newton County District Attorney’s office for review.
