Man dies inside home after early morning fire in SE Atlanta

The man was found in an upstairs bedroom while firefighters were still fighting the blaze.

ATLANTA - Firefighters found a man in his early 60s, dead inside a home during an early morning fire on Monday.

When firefighters arrived to a residence on the 1400 block of Murray Street, SE, at 12:56 a.m., they were met wit heavy smoke and fire.

Once they got into the house, they discovered 54-year old Edwin L. Haygood's body in an upstairs near a bedroom.

"A very unfortunate situation for our guys. When they do hard work and do an aggressive search, and are still unable to save someone because the fire was so heavy and so intense when they arrived on scene," said Sgt. Stafford Cortez with Atlanta Fire.

"I believe that it does, for our guys, it already makes an intense situation more heightened. This is what the men and women of the department do. They attempt to save lives and they're going to do everything they can to save a life no matter what the condition may be. But it does turn into a more intense situation knowing that there's a possibility that someone is inside and you want to do everything you can to go in there and save that person," Sgt. Stafford said.

Sgt. Cortez also said firefighters believe the fire started in a bedroom or upstairs where the man was located.

The man was the only person inside the house at the time and investigators are still determining what caused it at this time.

Haygood was a carpenter that specialized in woodworking according to his family.
