Hundreds of flags mark deceased local veterans in Cumming

The City of Cumming's Avenue of Flags places 250 American Flags outside Cumming Police Department for Veteran's Day ceremony.

CUMMING, Ga. — Outside of the Cumming Police Department, you'll notice hundreds of flags on display Monday afternoon. The flags were put out by the City of Cumming's Avenue of Flags as part of a community-wide Veterans Day celebration.

The event was organized by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1030 and put on in collaboration with the City of Cumming and other local veterans organizations.

The ceremony included patriotic music from several student choir groups, participation from the Forsyth County Fire and Sheriff Department Honor Guard, and comments from Mayor Troy Brumbalow.

The Director of the Joint Staff, Georgia National Guard, Brigadier General Thomas H. Blackstock Jr. also helped lead the event emphasizing how important it is to have youth involvement in Veterans day.

"These are the men and women that could be overseeing our country one day. They're the next generation of leaders and it's important that they understand this day and want to be involved in honoring veterans,"  says Blackstock.

The day concluded with the minors in attendance passing out hand written letters to veterans thanking them for their service.
