Free movies offered weekly throughout the summer

Georgia Movies in the Park features family-friendly events in unique locations, including Vickery Village.

CUMMING, Ga. — Some people spend top dollar to see a movie in a theatre. Others choose to save money by waiting till they can stream the movie at home. But, thanks to Southern Outdoor Cinema, there’s an even better option.

The company, which is based out of Alpharetta, organizes Georgia Movies in the Park, free family outdoor movie events.

“We generally try to do it between school, so late spring into early fall,” Paul Murray, the owner of Southern Outdoor Cinema, said. “Sometimes we’re doing as many as three a week. A lot of times we're doing Fridays and Saturdays, depending on the schedule, and oftentimes we're doing Tuesday's as well.”

Murray started the company 13 years ago, saying he always had an interest in drive-in movies.

“I wanted to have something my daughters could remember growing up and something they could go do in the summer with friends in a comfortable area,” he said. “That's how the business got started.”

In addition to the starting the company, Murray launched the free outdoor movie series but quickly realized he needed some help from sponsors.

“So we decided to contact Northside Hospital, and they've been with us from the beginning,” he said. “They saw our vision of creating family-friendly events that everybody could enjoy, that the community could enjoy together.”

The events are held regularly in six metro Atlanta locations, including Cumming, Canton, Alpharetta, Lake Lanier, Dawsonville, and Woodstock. In Cumming, the events are held every other Tuesday, with the next event coming up on June 25.

“We have a following,” Murray said. “We have people that follow us from location to location. They really enjoy the movies, and we have families that have grown up on Georgia Movies in the Park.”

The weekly events involve more than just movies. The evenings often begin with a scavenger hunt giveaway, and costume characters have also been known to make an appearance.

“We were at Woodstock this past weekend, and we had a whole bunch of characters like Spider-Man, Cinderella, and Prince Charming,” Murry said.

The movies start at sundown which is about 8:45 p.m.
