JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Georgia Cardinals started in 2014 with just five guys and two coaches. This according to the team’s co-owner Leonard Holmes who says they’ve come a long way.

“We just started building from there, getting a lot of young guys from high school that did not have the grades to get into school and things of that nature,” he said. “And we had a few college players that came out and just wanted to get a feel about our organization. We continue to build each year and now we're at a whole different level.”

Leonard’s wife Cindy is also a co-owner of the team which she says is more of a family than anything.

“Our goal really is to grow the organization, to bring people in, but then help them get out and move on and bring more people in,” Cindy said. “Our goal is really to be great people in the community.”

The team originally played at Osborne High School in Marietta, but the team is moving to John’s Creek and will be playing at Chattahoochee High School.

“They opened their arms to the Georgia Cardinals and they're excited about what we're bringing over to the school, not just for football, but for their football players and the fan base and parents,” Leonard said. “So we're going to do some things over there.”

Also new this year is the team’s head coach, Don Hernandez.

“I've been involved with football for 45 years as a player, coach, or a trainer,” Hernandez said. “Anyone who knows me knows I'm passionate about football. I love working with players. 45 years later, I can't wait to get on the football field to work with these guys. I'm excited about it.”

Darius Partridge, the former head coach, will now serve as the team’s general manager. He says it’s about much more than football.

“We bring them in and build those character traits for them, teach them football techniques, and help them hopefully try to find a home and get paid to play football,” Partridge said. “We have a very strong philosophy in place. We call it LMA - Leadership , Management, and Accountability. Being able to possess those three things are one of the first character traits that we look for in a player.”

Tryouts will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chattahoochee High School. To learn more about the program and how to get involved, head to www.GeorgiaCardinalsFootball.com.
