Local art showcased in historic Cumming home

The Sawnee Association of the Arts has found a new home just in time for the 18th Annual Springtime in the City.

CUMMING, Ga. — Anyone looking for an indoor activity this week should consider visiting the Brannon-Heard House. The historic site, which is owned by the city of Cumming, is currently being used by the Sawnee Association of the Arts.

“We are going to try to turn it into more of a gallery where more of our members can have their artwork on display,” Carole Kjellsen, the group's events planner, said. “We're trying to create an art center that people of Forsyth County will be very proud of.”

Nearly 70 pieces of art are currently on display as part of the 18th Annual Springtime in the City, a members-only contest that’s offered free to the public until May 5. Kjellsen says they usually close at 6 p.m. but this Friday, May 3, is an exception.

“This is our first Food Truck Friday in the city for the spring session, so we will be open until 8 or 9 that night,” she said. “We will have the outdoor art market going on. We have vendors who will be promoting the sales of their art. Some of our teachers will have their fans here so that they can have mobile operations to set up outside and show what they do. The arts center will be open, and we will have other art for sale on the front porch as well.”
