North Georgia retail institution prepares to close for last time

Parsons Gifts has operated in Lawrenceville and Cumming, but owners say online retail and other changes have made it hard to continue.

After 142 years in the family, Parsons Gifts in Cumming is having one last sale and then will close for good.

The flagship store of a retail chain that once spanned 12 stores will close in February. Owner Cris Willis said cultural and technological changes have led them to the difficult decision to close.

It was not a decision made lightly.

"The day I had to tell my associates was the hardest day ever," Willis said. "We felt like we were pulling the rug out from underneath them."

The Suwanee location of Parsons Gifts and Cards will not be affected by this closure.
