Students compete to raise funds for cancer research

"Students of the Year" is awarded to the candidate in each community who raises the most funds during the competition for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The student of the year campaign is an opportunity for kids to raise funds in the fight against blood born cancers. It’s a seven week campaign coordinated by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

During the campaign, participants foster professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The title, Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the candidate or co-candidates in each community that raise the most funds during the 7-week competition.

Mackenzie Brown was nominated for the “Student of the Year” program through LLS around the time her mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Last year, she raised more than $90,000 toward research for the disease. This year her goal is much bigger.

“This year we have a goal of $125,000,” Brown said.

On Wednesday, February 27th, members of “FOCO Cure” will host the fundraising event “Paint the Town Red.” The event encourages participants to shop locally and promotes participating businesses. 20 percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected or they have been affected themselves, so we just really want to give back and help,” said Brown.

The last date to donate for this year is Saturday, March 23rd.
