Police sergeant gifts face masks to homeless in East Atlanta

APD officer buys lifesaving masks for homeless to wear during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Atlanta Police Zone 6 Sergeant D. Simmons is making sure the homeless in East Atlanta have face masks to wear during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

On April 17, Sergeant Simmons led a group of Zone 6 and Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement (HOPE) in passing out personal protective materials to those in need.

The Atlanta Police Department highlighted the Sergeant's efforts on their social media pages writing, "A few weeks ago, Sgt. Simmons began the search to find someone to make masks for the most vulnerable individuals in our community."

According to the post, Simmons connected with a woman in Texas to make the 230 fabric masks and ship them to Atlanta. The Sgt. paid for the masks out of her own pocket and washed them before distribution. 

A group of officers then gathered at the precinct on Hosea L. Williams Dr. S.E. to place the masks in bags with paper towels and snacks. The group then officers visited several spots frequented by the homeless to deliver the supplies. 

The department writing that several homeless individuals recognized certain officers from previous interactions, and that "every encounter was positive." 

Zone 6 of the Atlanta Police Department is located in East Atlanta and contains Boulevard Heights, Cabbagetown, Candler Park, Druid Hills, East Atlanta, East Lake, Edgewood, Emory Village, Glenwood Park, Grant Park, Inman Park, Little Five Points, Old Fourth Ward, Ormewood, Kirkwood, Poncey-Highland, Sweet Auburn, Reynoldstown, Virginia Highland and Woodland Hills.
