EAST POINT, Ga. — How can a tree become a champion you may ask? Well, it is named after legendary Hall of Famer and former Atlanta Brave, Hank Aaron, but that’s not the reason why.

The Hank Aaron Oak Tree that resides East Point’s Connally Nature Park has been determined to be one of the largest known living White Oaks. East Point shares this distinction with a similar tree in Bartow County.

To be a Georgia champion tree, the tree must be the largest known tree of its species in the state. The tree must also be native to the continental United States. Georgia's champion trees are referred to the National Register of Big Trees.

The trees are rated on a point scale based on a number of measurements. The Hank Aaron Oak's score is 387.

The current national champion white oak is in Brunswick County, Virginia and is 331 inches in circumference and 451 points.

To give you some idea as to the stature of the Hank Aaron Oak Tree, here are its dimensions:

Circumference = 200 inches (approx. 16.5 feet)
Height = 168 feet
Crown Spread = 120 feet
