Kwanzaa has started!
The first day was Wednesday, Dec. 26 and the holiday runs through Jan. 1.
Thousands all over our area are observing the worldwide celebration of African American culture.
My News Reporter Olivia LaBorde spoke to a few dedicated to keeping this tradition alive. Nia Sadé Akinyemi is organizing a special event this Sunday in East Point.
"It's a way to really just get folks engaged in the cultural and activist scene here in Atlanta,” she said.
Seven candles represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa:
- Umoja (Unity)
- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
- Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
- Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
- Nia (Purpose)
- Kuumba (Creativity)
- Imani (Faith)
Julian "The General " Smith is also observing the holiday.
"The morals and the principles of Kwanzaa help to the restore the tragic legacies of slavery into freedom an abundance,” he said.
Organizers for the event said it seems observance of the holiday has dwindled in recent years. They're hoping their celebration will help people remember Kwanzaa's importance.
“This event on the 30th will give people a chance to see what the celebration is truly like,” said Akinyemi.
Dr. Maulana Karenga also known as Ron McKinley Everett, created Kwanzaa in 1966.
The event will start at 3 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown East Point.
