Local dance company presents a soulful twist on a holiday classic

Ballethnic Dance Company co-founder, Nena Gilreath discusses the influences and cultural impact of the Urban Nutcracker.

Brown Sugar? The Chocolatier? Mother Spice? Sound familiar, no?

Well that's just what the folks at the Ballethnic Dance Company want. For nearly thirty years, Nena Gilreath along with her husband and co-founder, Waverly Lucas have been providing the Atlanta area with Afro-tinged innovative shows. The culmination of which is one their most lauded annual performances, The Urban Nutcracker.

"By blending African dance with ballet, we came up with our unique fusion of dance," says Gilreath.

This soulful rendition of the Russian classic delights audience members with an impressive fusion of modern dance, tap and jazz while retaining all the magic of the original story.

"With all of our ballets, there's an element of history. An element of celebrating all the hues and colors of who we are," adds Gilreath.

This holiday season, East Point's own Tri-Cities High School was fortunate enough to host the several day run of the Urban Nutcracker at the Viola Turner Theater.
