Registration open for Sickle Cell Race in East Point

Money raised from the April 13th race will assist the organization with raising awareness of this potentially deadly disease.

EAST POINT, Ga. — The Sickle Cell Road Race and Walk is coming soon!

This year is the 40th anniversary for the event hosted by the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia.

“It’s not just a 4k race or a 7k race, it’s to help the children that have sickle cell," says Administrative Director Tabitha Ricketts.

Money raised from the April 13th race will assist the organization with raising awareness of this potentially deadly disease.

Ricketts says most that suffer from Sickle Cell are from African descent.

“The fact we’re partnering with East Point that is predominately black, it brings more awareness and education to our marketplace," said Ricketts.

The City of East point recently approved to contribute $45,000 the race. This amount consists of a combination of lodging tax contribution and in-kind services.

Ricketts says some of the funds raised from the race will go sponsor children attending their annual camp for children suffering from the disease.

“There are 150 children that are going to camp, when you see their eyes sparkle and talk about how the camp has changed their lives, you understand how important this experience is for them,” Ricketts.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. at Tri-Cities High School and will run through Main Street.

Registration is now open. The cost ranges from $35-$45. For more information go to their website
