Smoothie and coffee shop with a healthy twist comes to East Point

Along with vegan and gluten-free choices, the café still offers traditional favorites.

EAST POINT, Ga. — Sylvan Road isn’t where most would expect to find gluten-free cakes or vegan cookies.

But that’s exactly why Keisha Mackie and Kim Bowden say they decided to set up shop there.

The two friends opened Blendz, a smoothie, and coffee shop, in East Point last month.

“I’ve lived in the area about five years, and just got tired of driving out of town to get some of the healthier foods I wanted,” said Mackie.

Along with vegan and gluten-free choices, the café still offers traditional favorites.

“We have lattes, espresso, and everything people are used to having also,” said Bowden.

One item many might not be used to are smoothies with collard greens as an ingredient.

“You don’t even taste it, actually most tell us they’re the best smoothies they’ve ever had,” said Bowden.

Snowballs are another specialty item on the menu. The frozen ice treat is influenced by Mackie’s New Orleans roots.

“We make it with the condensed milk just like they do back home,” said Mackie.

Although only time will tell if the shop is a success, however, the ladies say the initial response makes them hopeful for the future.

“I think the community has been waiting to have something like this here and we’re just that place right now,” said Bowden.
