GWINNETT, Ga. — Four Dual Language Immersion in Gwinnett County schools were treated to the opera right on campus.
The Atlanta Opera performed “The Barber of Seville” for Baldwin, Annistown, Bethesda, and Camp Creek Elementary School.
“It’s always so nice to see the students’ reactions when we are performing ‘The Barber of Seville,’ which is an adaptation in two languages,” Virin Vedder, who plays the Figaro, said.
Although, the Atlanta Opera has been working with Gwinnett County Public Schools for years, this the first time they’ve teamed up with DLI schools.
“The Barber of Seville” was not picked on a whim. In the story the lead character helps translate for his two friends who are in love. The two languages the students heard through out the play were English and Spanish.
“That’s the exact mission that we’re doing here, in Gwinnett County Public Schools in our Dual Lanuage Immersion Program, giving students the opportunity to acquire multi-lingual skills and the ability to work with other cultures at the same time,” Virin Vedder, Coordinator of World Languages and DLI at GCPS, said.
