Gwinnett Animal Shelter stops pet adoptions and encourages fostering

Shelter remains closed, but suggests ways to follow their adoptable pets.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett Animal Shelter remains closed to visitors, following an emergency order last week. But while their doors are closed, staff are encouraging county residents to help out their adoptable animals in other ways.

Shelter staff is encouraging residents to become a temporary foster if they find a pet during the closure. Shelter Deputy Division Director Chandler Giddes says that with a decrease in outgoing animals, they will have to limit the allowance of incoming animals.

During the closure, the shelter will also not be accepting owner surrenders. Licensed rescues and approved fosters will be the only parties permitted to visit the shelter.

Giddes says that residents interested in adopting an animal can still view their pets on the Gwinnett County Shelter's Facebook page, as well as learn more information about them on their website.

"Once our doors are back open, residents can come meet the animal that they're interested in," says Giddes.

Strays can be reported by calling 770.339.3200, or the police non-emergency 770.513.5700.
