Gwinnett crash leaves one dead, children seriously injured

Five people were in the car when it left the road, went airborne and hit a tree, police say.

A 29-year-old woman was killed and four others, including two children, were injured after a Tuesday morning accident outside of Lawrenceville.

Police investigating the accident said that 27-year-old Lateika Powell was heading north on Callie Still Road and attempted to negotiate a curve when she lost control of her Toyota Camry, near Laricks Lane.

According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, she left the roadway and the car went airborne, hitting a tree. The backseat passenger, 29-year-old Candice Tate, was killed in the crash. 

Two children, 8-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez and 5-year-old Mykal Tate, were also in the back seat and seriously injured. The driver suffered serious injuries and a 30-year-old passenger in the front seat, Ebony Tate, had unknown but visible injuries.

The car has been impounded by the Gwinnett County Police Department for further investigation. No charges have been filed.
