Lawrenceville Councilman officially resigns

Tony Powell steps down from his elected post with the City of Lawrenceville

Tony Powell submitted his resignation from his elected position with the City of Lawrenceville after Tuesday’s council meeting. 

He has been a member of the board since 2010. Powell will be taking the next several months to focus his attention on new ventures with his law firm, Powell & Edwards – Attorneys at Law, P.C. and serving as a member of the non-profit board, Impact 46.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I was afforded to help move Lawrenceville forward. It has been a privilege to serve with some of the finest leaders in all of Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta and I would like to thank my fellow council members, the businesses and the residents of Lawrenceville for their faith in me these past several years.”

During his time with the City of Lawrenceville, Powell worked to maintain the City’s stable financial position, uphold transparency and the public process, and recruit and direct the City to new staff leadership that has supported the Council’s vision which will realize more than one-billion dollars of collective public and private investment for Lawrenceville in the next few years.

Powell has publicly recommended Victoria Jones to be his successor and if the Council nominates her, she will be the first Black woman to serve on the City Council. Jones is currently apart of the Downtown Development Authority. Existing Council will discuss next steps in the process of filling this post at the upcoming work session on January 16, 2019.
