Lawrenceville Councilman to step down

Lawrenceville Councilman Toney Powell is resigning, at a city council meeting he urged the city to make history.

A councilman is resigning, but one of his final requests would make history.

Councilman Toney Powell will be stepping down from the Lawrenceville City Council after Dec. 19.

"My promise to this community is that I will serve two four year terms. And the term limit that it applies to is the most important thing and that's when it's time to go," Toney Powell said.

Powell has recommended Victoria Jones to be his successor.

"I don't get to make that decision, I just find her the best person to fill the spot period. That's why I encourage her nomination," Powell said.

If the Council nominates her, Jones will be the first Black woman to serve on the City Council.

Jones is apart of the Downtown Development Authority, she is already looking forward to joining City Council.

"I've had the opportunity to get to see a lot of things happening in Lawrenceville and take a front seat to that. So yes, there are already thing I have ideas about," Victoria Jones said.
