Police: Teen accidentally shoots friend, turns gun on himself

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A teenager shot and killed himself after shooting another teenager in Gwinnett County on Monday, police said.

According to Gwinnett County Police, four teenagers were hanging out in what was described as a makeshift shed around the 1800 block of Riverlanding Circle near Lawrenceville.

The location appears to be a residential area just off of Sugarloaf Parkway and Old Norcross Road.

According to police, one of the teens, 15-year-old Devin Hodges, pulled out a gun to show to his friends when he accidentally fired a shot. It hit his friend, 17-year-old Chad Carless, who was sitting next to him. One of the teens called 911, but Carless died before help could arrive.

As officers came up to the scene, they saw Hodges run between two homes, but before they could speak to him, police said the 15-year-old turned the gun on himself. He was fatally wounded.

Detectives are still gathering information on the case.
