Suspect shoots at Dekalb County officer during traffic stop

This is the third officer-involved shooting along that stretch of roadway in the last 45 days.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An officer-involved shooting happened near Candler Road and Misty Waters Drive around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Chief James Conroy, an officer was trying to pull a car over when one of the people inside the car got out and fired a shot at police. Conroy said the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

Conroy said the suspect was taken to the hospital, but no one else was reported hurt. The suspect is in serious condition at Atlanta Medical Center, GBI authorities said Tuesday.

A man and a woman who were also in the car were detained and questioned. 11Alive is working to determine if those two are still in custody.

DeKalb County Police officers blocked off a Chevron gas station with police tape. That station remained taped off through Wednesday morning.

Witnesses near the scene said several police cars, fire trucks and medical staff were there Tuesday night.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation went to the scene to handle the investigation -- standard practice for most law enforcement agencies in Georgia when a shooting involves an officer.

The GBI will complete an independent review of the investigation and once complete, will turn their findings to the DeKalb District Attorney's Office for review.

This is the third officer-involved shooting along Candler Road in the last 45 days.

One involved an incident at a Red Lobster restaurant near the intersection of Candler Road and Winston Manor Drive. The officer, in this case, was off-duty and working as security. One suspect died and another was injured.
