ATLANTA -- It's pink. It's October. So, it must be going towards Breast Cancer research, right? The Better Business Bureau says maybe not.
The Atlanta BBB issued a warning about pinkwashing. It's the term used to describe unscrupulous companies that claim to support breast cancer, but never fulfill their claims about donating. The BBB has found pink products ranging from teddy bears to lint rollers. Some of those products donate a significant amount, but many do not.
The BBB issued some specific guidance on how to avoid pinkwashing:
- Inspect the product for information about how much of the sales go to charity and specifically how the money will be spent. If claims are vague, it's a sign of pinkwashing.
- Check the company's website. That's often where they'll list additional specific information about charity donations. See where they've spent money in the past. Check to see if there's an affiliation with a reputable charity.
- Contact the charity directly if you see questionable claims.
- Is the charity worthy of your support? Check Give.org for reports on non-profit organizations.
