Pike County Commissioner Tommy Powers dies at 83

PIKE COUNTY, Ga. — The Pike County community is mourning the death of one of its commissioners.

Marvin "Tommy" Powers, died Tuesday, according to State Rep. Ken Pullin. He was 83 years old.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Commissioner Powers, a valued member of his community,” said Rep. Pullin in a news release. “My wife, Shelby, and I are keeping the Powers family and the Pike County community in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Pullin requested for flags in the county to be lowered at half-staff in honor of Powers. 

The late commissioner, a veteran of the U.S. Army, served during the Korean War. 

Service to his community didn't stop there. Powers worked as the Pike County coroner for eight years. He was in his fourth term as the county commissioner for district 3 when he died.

Powers, who was business savvy, was self-employed for years. He operated Powers Country Store, Powers Superette, and Seven Oaks Restaurant.

He leaves behind his wife, Charlotte Powers, his two children and their spouses, grandchildren, and other family members.

Powers' funeral will be held on Thursday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Baptist Church. The burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends can visit the family on Wednesday, June 19,  5 p.m. until  7 p.m. at the funeral home. Get more funeral details here.
