Police looking for women who escaped with north Ga. gas station gunman

Police believe there are two people of interest who can help identify the man responsible for the shooting.

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. - A man is in critical condition after being shot at a Bartow County gas station and the gunman is still on the run.

The shooting happened at a QuikTrip gas station near Interstate 75 along State Highway 140 where Adairsville Police said travelers often pull off the road to sleep during long drives.

Surveillance cameras captured the moment the suspect's vehicle pulled into the parking lot around 10:30 Sunday night. The gunman then stayed inside the car for six hours. Video showed that shortly after parking, two women exited the car and took turns going inside the gas station.

Adairsville Chief of Police Mike Jones wants to talk with each of the women to figure out their relationship with the shooter.

"There was a female driving. There was another female in the backseat," Chief Jones said.

Around 2:30 a.m. investigators said the victim, 30-year-old Jonathan Michael Meyer from Clearwater, Florida parked his truck in the spot next to the women. Police said Meyer needed to sleep during a trip from Tennessee to Florida after attending a wedding over the weekend.

About an hour later around 3:30, police said a man finally gets out of the car where the two women were. Police said he appeared to have put something in the back of Meyer’s truck, waking him up.

"The gentleman asked him a couple of questions and then demanded for him to get out of the truck, showed him a handgun,” Chief Jones said. “The victim then started backing out. When the victim started backing out of the parking spot, the suspect started firing."

After refusing to give up his truck, the gunman shot Meyer in the chest. Meyer then crashed his truck into two other vehicles waking up the people sleeping inside them.

Police said the suspect got away in the car described as a late 90's Toyota, possibly a Camry model.

"Maybe we will get some good leads and have some people calling in, giving us some good information on it,” Chief Jones said.

Meyer was expected to head into surgery on Monday and remains in critical condition.

The shooter was described as wearing a light-colored T-shirt, a dark backpack, and a dark cap. The driver of the sedan is described as a white female, in her late 20s to early 30s, possibly 5'4" ft. to 5'5" ft. in height and has blonde hair.

Police want to identify the second woman who may help lead investigators to find the shooter. The woman is described as being a white with a “distinguishing mark or bruise” on the inside portion of her left thigh above the knee and was wearing a camouflage T-shirt. She was a passenger in the vehicle that fled the scene.
