Police: Uber driver crashed during medical emergency, killing her passenger

65-year-old Shirley Brooks died from injuries after the Uber allegedly crossed multiple lanes and crashed into a utility pole.

ATLANTA -- Two people injured, and another one killed when police say a rideshare driver had a medical emergency and crashed.

It happened Sunday night just before midnight near the intersection of Ivan Allen Blvd. and West Peachtree Street.

Atlanta Police say the driver suffered a medical emergency and "veered across the double lanes and crossed into the northbound traffic and struck a utility pole."

She and the front seat passenger were taken to the hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

The passenger in the back seat, 65-year-old Shirley Brooks, was transported to the hospital where she died of her injuries, according to officials.

Brooks was a Florida resident who was moving to the state of Georgia, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office.

At this time, Atlanta Police say charges are not anticipated for the driver.

An Uber spokesperson released a statement expressing their sympathy.

“We are terribly saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of everyone involved.”

Uber also said they will cooperate with the police investigation.
