A protest at a Confederate statue in downtown Gainesville on Saturday drew a heavy police presence but ended peacefully.
The rally began around 11:30 am at the “Old Joe” monument on the town square, which was built in 1909 by a local Daughters of the Confederacy chapter.
The protest was organized by the Northeast Georgia Democratic Socialists of America, and several counter-protesters were in attendance.
Police arrived at some point during the protest.
