RIVERDALE, Ga. -- More information is coming out about how a police officer killed in the line of duty last week.

Major Greg Barney was not wearing a bullet-proof vest when he went to supervise a team carrying out a no-knock drug warrant.

A press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he was an "on-site supervisor who witnessed (the suspect) running from behind the apartment while the SWAT team made entry."

Preliminary findings from an autopsy report revealed Maj. Barney was shot a total of four times: the abdomen, arm, lower back and leg.

The injuries to the leg and lower back were discovered in the autopsy because they were not noticeable at the crime scene.

Riverdale Police say that Ma.r Greg Barney was one of two police officers who did not wear a bulletproof vest to the raid at the Villages on the River apartment complex.

Barney was killed in an exchange of gunfire when a suspect fled an apartment during the raid.

That suspect, 24-year-old Jerand Ross, was also shot and is recovering in the hospital. Ross faces murder charges in Maj Barney's death.

Two more people were arrested in the apartment at the center of the raid. Clayton County Police Department Drug Task Force arrested Joey C. King and Robert Dixon Jr.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Reynolds said that Barney was one of three Riverdale Police officers who provided "assistance" in the raid. Two of them, including Barney, are on the police department's command staff. Reynolds said command staff routinely don't wear bulletproof vests, because they typically work behind desks.
