SAVANNAH, Ga. — Funeral services for Savannah Police Sgt. Kelvin Ansari were held on Saturday.
Sgt. Ansari was shot and killed while approaching a robbery suspect last weekend.
WSAV reports that when officers approached a car with a suspect inside, the shooting occurred. A second officer was wounded in the shooting. The shooting suspect was killed in the ensuing gunfire.
The 10-year-veteran officer had served with the U.S. Army for 20 years prior to joining the Savannah police force, according to WSAV-TV. According to 11Alive's sister station WCNC, Ansari was from Charlotte, N.C.
Funeral services are taking place at Savannah's Calvary Baptist Church. A police motorcade will proceed to Bonaventure Cemetary following the service.
