Smyrna Police offering free grocery and medicine delivery to seniors, families in hardships amid coronavirus

Here are the program details.

SMYRNA, Ga. — The Smyrna Police Department is partnering with the mayor to offer grocery and medicine delivery to seniors in the area to reduce their risk of contracting the coronavirus, according to department officials.

The department posted the news to its Facebook page.

"As announced yesterday we have launched a new program to help the elderly in our community as well as those at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 due to Immune deficiencies," the caption stated.

The program hours run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the police will be available to pick up and deliver groceries. Seniors must be 62 and older to qualify.

The program will also help families that are unable to go to a grocery store or pharmacy due to hardships.

Below are the program details:

If you are a senior 62 years of age or older and/or you have a hardship situation, such as an underlying health condition, you can call in, or order online, your grocery or pharmacy order at the following participating merchants:

  • Publix (Smyrna S. Cobb Drive store)
  • Kroger (Smyrna S. Cobb Drive store)
  • Walmart (Cobb Parkway at Terrell Mill Road)
  • Walgreens/CVS (Smyrna stores)

The department said they "must hear from you before you place your order." This will allow them to work out a daily schedule.

Once the participant's order is ready and available to be picked up, participants should call Sgt. Louis Defense at 404-661-6699 or Officer Taylor Elliott at 678-816-8396 with the details. Then, they will deliver it.

The service is free, however, the department wants to be clear that they cannot pay for orders, so payment must be arranged prior to pick up. They also made it clear that they cannot do the shopping for participants, and they will not touch or manipulate said items purchased.

All incorrect orders must be worked out with the merchant, the department said.

The department shared the first delivery on Facebook. Check it out here
