ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police are investigating a man who was shot in the face Friday morning.

The shooting happened in the 2600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta at 10:50 a.m.

Police said the man was attempting to break up a fight when he was shot in the face.

According to Sgt. John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department, the suspect -- later identified by police as 22 year-old Demarquis Gist -- came out of an apartment with a handgun.

Chafee says Gist pointed his gun at the victim and another man. He says those two tried to leave the area, but Gist continued to menace them with the gun. The victim, then pulled out his own gun and fired several times, hitting Gist.

Gist was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta in stable condition.

Atlanta Police are charging him with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He also had an existing warrant for felony drug possession stemming from a 2017 incident.
