Teen's Twitch stream on walk to Dragon Con may help solve violent robbery

One was live streaming on Twitch as the other teen, who is off-camera was taking pictures of a southwest Atlanta neighborhood

ATLANTA -- Police say teens who were walking down the street live streaming from their phone ended up broadcasting their own robbery.

Now, Atlanta investigators hope video the victims caught through the app known as Twitch will help them solve the crime. The robbery happened near the intersection of Campbellton Road and Lee Street in southwest Atlanta. They were on their way to the Oakland City MARTA station heading to Dragon Con.

One was live streaming on Twitch as the other teen, who is off-camera was taking pictures of a southwest Atlanta neighborhood. Then, someone walked behind them attempting to steal the camera.

"JP, just let go of it, JP just let go of it," a voice says in the recording.

But the teen didn't let go.

"The victim struggled with the male for a while but the suspect hit him a couple of times in the head," Atlanta Police spokesperson Jarius Daugherty said.

An attempted "grab-and-go" had become a struggle between the two. Daugherty said it could have turned serious.

"These are things we can handle ladder," he said. "It's not worth risking injury like that or anything over it."

Eventually, the suspect got away with the camera and ran off. But the live stream caught a good image of him. Now, Atlanta police are hoping someone can recognize the man and call them immediately.

"It was helpful. Not only did we get video of the suspect but it's pretty clear so hopefully you guys putting this out to the city, we're able to get some inquiries about that," Daugherty said.

11Alive tried to get in touch with the teens but they were from out of town and didn't respond for comment.
