Toddler improving after he was hit by a stray bullet

Levar Antwan Reed, 17, has been charged with shooting a 1-year-old boy in the arm.
An infant was struck by a stray bullet at an apartment complex in SE Atlanta.

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Family and friends are praying for the recovery of a 1-year-old caught in the crossfire of two rival groups at an apartment complex Saturday night.

Rodrickus Robinson is showing some improvement, but the fear is that the toddler may never regain full use of his arm.

"He can't move his arm, He can't move his hand -- he can't," the child's mother, Courtney Holt, said Monday. "He can't do nothing. He's just sitting in the bed."

Tuesday morning, the boy's aunt, Lashunda Hankerson, said he can now lift his arm a bit, but still can't move his fingers.

Family members and friends who live at the southwest Atlanta apartment complex are upset and frustrated, calling what happened senseless.

The mother of Junior, or Junie as he's called, says the toddler was in the arms of his great-grandmother when the bullets started flying.

"This is my only boy," she said. "That's just the only thing that was going through my head -- be alright with him."

She says the bullet hit an artery in his upper arm. Doctors performed emergency surgery to restore blood flow, and there is now some pulse in his hand.

Meanwhile, Atlanta Police have arrested one person in connection with the shooting. Seventeen-year-old Levar Reed is charged with aggravated assault and battery, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm -- but investigators are still looking for others involved.

"Please, whoever you may think had something to do, speak up. Stand up for what's right," Holt said.

Police say those involved in this shooting face serious charges -- in part because of where it happened and how many other children and adults could have been injured or killed.

Reed waived his first scheduled court appearance Monday afternoon. He is being held in the Fulton County Jail.
